No Title This Time

Dear Friends,

So far this week has been very busy. I have to admit that I am looking forward to this weekend. AsEnero_2008_040 I told you I applied to become an ambassador here at Queens, and luckily I got the job! J (If you come here on campus ask for Milenko and I'll give you a tour.) This week is the orientation and training so I have to go to several meetings. Also, the weekend of February the 15th is the Presidential Week. This is the week when the finalists come to campus and meet with the interviewers. I am very exited about hosting one finalist.

School has been a little challenging this week. I had many papers due and a whole lot of readings to do. Luckily I enjoy all my classes. Yeah! That is a pretEnero_2008_041_2ty nerdy thing to say BUT let me tell you that I think you will find classes interesting as well. This semester for example, in my economics class we are learning about its main concepts and how they relate to the possible recession. In my Chinese class I am going to do a project about Ping-Pong (which by the way is my favorite sport) and the Olympics. So I think I have a good reason to be enjoying my classes.

On Saturday I went to my first professional NBA basketball game. I really liked the Charlotte Bobcats even though according to some they are not the best. Tuesday the dinning hall did a special dinner which they called “movie night.” During this night they played the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” and had a red carpet, popcorn, hot dogs, and pretzels. Some people even won movies and posters. Unfortunately luck was not with me that night.

An important evEnero_2008_049ent that took place this weekend was a forum about the elections of 2008. This activity was sponsored by the ALAS program (If you want to find out what ALAS is read previous episode of the blog). It was a very interesting meeting which, as usual, raised more questions than answers. However, I learned new perspectives and insightful opinions.

Thanks for reading

“Todos sabemos querer pero pocos sabemos amar” Jose Jose

This is the Spanish poetry for the day. I actually included this passage because as I am writing this blog I am listening to some old ballads. I think today is one of those days were you think of who you are and where you come from.  College gives you a time so you can reflect and come up with sometimes random ideas (HA-HA.)

I am now ready to keep on working hard through this semester. I am now over the vacation mode. This week was very interesting. I got a job at the Bobcats which lasted a DAY. Do not get me wrong, I am not a bad employee but the company that hired me was not explicit in the work description and thus when I went for my first day it turned out to be a job I was not expecting. A piece of advice for you, when you get a job READ THE JOB DESCRIPTION first. On the good side, however, I got to see a match and be really close to Patrick Ewing. After I finished the exhausting work I went to my dorm and slept. That same night it snowed and unfortunately I was too tired to go and play. The next day my friends told me they had a BLAST. It started snowing at midnight and most people did not stop until five in the morning.

One of the classes I am really enjoying this semester is my tennis class. Not to say that I do not like my other conceptual classes but my tennis class helps relieve tension and gives you a nice work out. Talking about exercise I started to take some martial arts classes. I attended a class just from curiosity and ended up liking it. One of the professors teaches it and the best thing is that they are free. I am learning Kung Fu and Tai Chi.

This Monday we had a Martin Luther King memorial. I realized that many of us do not really understand why we are celebrating him. Last semester I had the opportunity to read some of his writing. I was astonished by his logic and tender heart. After meditating I realized that he truly deserves a day in history for his accomplishments.

One of the things I am looking forward here in Queens is getting more involved. Now I am doing some activities with the school but my plans are very ambitious. This week is the meeting for the Queens Ambassadors. They basically help prospective students and do tours of the school. I am going to apply and I hope I am able to get in.

Well my dear readers C’est tout pour aujourd’hui

Hasta Luego

Hello Again !

I hope you all had a merry Christmas and a happy new year.  I am back at Queens ready to thrive.

This week has been LONG. It is difficult to get used to the routine after three weeks of vacation. To be honest I was both happy and sad to start a new semester. I sincerely did not want to leave my home, family and friends. On the good side, however, I am very exited to continue my classes and to enjoy everything Queens and Charlotte has to offer.

As I said befGuayaquil_3ore, this week was very long. Monday was the first day of school. I was delighted to meet all my new professors. My schedule this semester is perfect. I have all afternoons free and for that reason, and because I am broke, I am searching for a job (if anyone is offering feel free to contact me ha-ha.)

Tuesday I had the opportunity to go and watch a meeting of the ALAS program. This program is sponsored by the Charlotte Metropolitan Schools and the Latin American Coalition. The meeting I saw was very inspirational. I saw high school students wanting to make a difference in their communities.

Wednesday I was able to talk with the Student Government and give them some ideas on how to reduce the price of textbooks. Fortunately they liked my idea and we are going to talk about it in the following meeting.

My weekend was very relaxing. I just chilled ha-ha. I watched a couple of movies, talked to some friends, played some guitar and did some homework.

P.S.: I was not able to take any pictures this time so I am going to put some of my natal city- Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Write to you soon Milenko
